Charlotte Perkins ”The Yellow Wallpaper”
2) Explain the relationship between narrator and her husband, John. How does this relationship affect the narrator.
The relationship between the narrator and her husband John is distance and miscommunication. The narrator explains how she sees things and how the wallpaper bothers her. Her husband John would always respond with how she should just rest and stop thinking other than what is recommended in helping her “get well”. How she is to take medications
and follow her husband/physician. John tells how he cares for the narrator but mostly
takes on more of the medical physician role than her partner. The narrator feels as if her husband doesn't understand or even bother to see her point of view.
From page 2, lines 51-56 the narrator quotes “I am afraid, but I don't care - there is something strange about the house - I can feel it. I even said so to John one moonlight
evening, but he said what I felt was a draught, and shut the window”. The narrator explains how she feels fearful,as if an evil presence was there. John simply ignores. As if it didn't matter and was speaking nonsense. Another quotation that is important is“John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him.”. The narrator knows what’s most important to John is her showing signs of improvement. She doesn't want to cause any more problems then what they already are facing with her being crazy taking medications and suffer “depression”.
